Speed and alcohol are believed to be the causes of a fatal car wreck Sunday night on South Irving Street that left three men dead and two others in critical condition.
Witnesses who reported seeing a Honda sedan blow through a red light estimated the car was traveling about 50 miles per hour, said Denver police Sgt. Mike Farr of the traffic investigations unit.
The speed limit on South Irving is 30 mph.
Investigators also found 40-ounce bottles of malt liquor at the scene, leading them to believe alcohol may have been a factor, Farr said.
The Denver County Coroner's Office identified the three killed as 20-year-old Brian Eli Alvarez, the car's driver; 18-year-old Bryan Moreno, the front-seat passenger; and 20-year-old Nicasio Flores, who was riding in the back seat. All three died of blunt force injuries, the coroner's office said in a news release.
The other two back seat passengers remained in critical condition on Monday.
The crash happened shortly after 9:30 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of South Irving Street and West Jewell Avenue, Farr said.
The Honda's driver lost control after hitting a dip in the intersection while driving south on South Irving Street. The sedan slammed into a tree in the median.
All involved were men in their 20s, Farr said. Their identities have not been released. They were not wearing seat belts.
Traffic investigators are consulting with other units within the Denver Police Department and other area agencies to learn about the backgrounds of those involved.
It will be a few days before investigators are able to speak to the two survivors to find out where the men had been and where they were going, Farr said. Investigators also will do an accident reconstruction.
